Study of Sustainable Thickeners for the Development of the Marbling Technique in Textiles

Given the current emergence of adopting more sustainable practices in the production of textile articles, we focus our attention on the design of printed textile surfaces based on the artisanal technique of Marbling. The implementation of the Marbling technique is carried out through the synergy between the bath, the paints and the textile support. Thus, the present work addresses the bath component, to promote a more effective application of the technique on textiles suitable for clothing or home textiles, through the study of the suitability of various thickeners of natural origin and non-aggressive neither to the environment nor to the human being. Six thickeners were selected, ranging from food thickeners, general purpose thickeners and textile thickeners, at different concentration values. To study the behaviour of the thickeners, both acrylic fabric inks and textile pigments were used. The most promising results regarding the quality of the designs obtained on the fabric and the non-contamination of the bath (thus allowing its reuse) were obtained for the textile thickener based on Alginate at a concentration of 10 g/l; corn starch at concentrations of 20 g/l and 25 g/l and Guar gum at a concentration of 4 g/l. These results allow us to move on to the study of colour fastness of the prints obtained, particularly using textile pigments, aiming at the application of the technique as a practice for a sustainable textile design of clothing and home textile products.
