Technology for 3D Recording of Cultural Heritage

Currently, LiDAR, photogrammetry, photometric stereo, and 3D Gaussian Splatting technologies are used as 3D recording methods for cultural heritage. Measurement methods and equipment can be determined according to the purpose of 3D recording, which can range from simple to precise 3d scanning of cultural heritage. For precise measurement, precise 3D scanners and photogrammetry are used, either alone or in combination with photometric stereo technology, if detailed measurements are required. Precise data for large areas can be acquired by using drone photogrammetry and drone LiDAR. Low-poly models can be easily produced using a LiDAR or photogrammetry application running on a smartphone. The 3D Gaussian Splatting technique can be used for background or rough 3D recording for realistic content, such as games and movies. In this study, we investigated recent cultural heritage 3D recording technologies and compared these methods according to the type, purpose of use, and precision.
