Dreaming takes place during REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep. All sensory inputs are turned off. The source material or subject matter of a dream (images, data, etc.) can be obtained from memory. As the dream is being composed, it is stored in both long-term and short-term memory, just like streaming sensory inputs would be stored. If awakened in the middle of a dream, the dream thus far will be recalled from short-term memory in full detail. If awakened post-REM, the dream will not be recalled. There will be no awareness that dreaming had taken place. Recall of the dream from long-term memory would not happen since the necessary prompt would be unknown. Searching for the prompt is done by psychiatrists talking with a patient attempting to retrieve “bad dreams” from long-term memory, all for the purpose of therapy.
