Mitigating Nutrient Pollution from Livestock Manure: Strategies for Sustainable Management

Nutrient pollution, primarily resulting from human activities, is a significant environmental concern that deteriorates water quality and contributes to greenhouse gases emissions. Animal manure is a substantial source of organic matter for crops as well as a major contributor to nutrient pollution due to improper management during handling, storage, and application. The excessive release of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus from livestock manure leads to nutrient leaching, ammonia volatilization, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, odor emissions, and the growth of harmful cyanobacteria in water bodies. These processes result in eutrophication, air pollution, and adverse impacts on the health of humans and animals. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the environmental impacts of nutrient pollution from livestock manure and discusses various management strategies to mitigate these effects. Effective storage techniques, such as covered structures and lagoons, are vital in preventing nutrient leaching, runoff, and greenhouse gas emissions. Proper transportation planning, field application methods, and comprehensive nutrient management plans are essential to optimize nutrient uptake, minimize runoff, and reduce environmental impact. Additionally, national and global initiatives promote sustainable manure management to mitigate the risks of nutrient pollution. In conclusion, the use of fertilizers and manure provides undeniable agricultural benefits however, the mismanagement can trigger significant environmental problems. Sustainable practices and increased awareness among farmers are crucial for regulating and mitigating the adverse effects of nutrient pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
