Amyloid brain pathology consists of amyloid plaques and is temporally the first brain pathology present in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The presence of amyloid plaques in the brain can only be definitively established by neuropathology performed at autopsy. However, the development of positron emission tomography ligands that specifically bind to amyloid plaques has allowed for spatial resolution of the presence of amyloid plaques in the brain with high, but not perfect, accuracy. Similarly, biomarkers present in both cerebrospinal fluid and blood can be used to identify the presence of amyloid plaques in the brain. In this chapter, we describe the current state of the art for both imaging and fluid biomarkers developed to identify the presence or absence of amyloid brain pathology.
