The boom in the Indian e-commerce market has changed how people typically shop since the COVID-19 pandemic. Ensuring accessibility is a must for e-commerce platforms to create inclusive experiences and equitable access to digital spaces. However, many companies overlook a portion of their customer base, namely the visually impaired. A significant number of web platforms in India lack alternative text for non-text content (e.g., images, audio, and video), keyboard accessibility, and screen reader compatibility which affects the smooth navigation of various e-commerce platforms. The WCAG 2.2 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) has a set of guidelines and success criteria to ensure that websites and digital content are accessible and usable. However, it needs more emphasis on improving the overall experience for visually impaired users who rely on screen readers to shop for products and services on e-commerce platforms. Based on a comprehensive literature review, user studies, and UX audits, we identify specific shortcomings in the guidelines and how AI can be incorporated further into e-commerce systems to enhance accessibility. Our findings suggest a more holistic approach to accessibility that includes user testing, real-world user scenarios, and integration of emerging technologies like AI, including chatbots and image identification.
