The elbow, forearm, and wrist function as a unit to position the hand in space and perform load-bearing tasks. Critical to this collective unit are the osseous structures of the radius and ulna along with their associated soft tissue attachments. Trauma to this collective is relatively common and injuries can lead to unfavorable results if not recognized and treated properly. Fractures of the radius or ulna can occur in an isolated fashion, together, or be associated with more extensive soft tissue injury (i.e., Monteggia and Galeazzi injuries). With appropriate injury recognition and restoration of anatomy, patient outcomes tend to be predictable. This chapter focuses on the recognition, preoperative evaluation, and operative techniques for adult fractures and associated injuries of the forearm. The goal of this chapter is to provide a practical and pragmatic guide for the treatment of these injuries.
