In orthopaedic trauma surgery, surgical site infection (SSI) remains a common complication associated with increased morbidity, as well as a significant financial and psychological burden. SSI occurs in 5–10% of orthopaedic trauma cases, depending on the location and severity of injury. Most institutions follow standardized protocols to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HCAI). Despite common acceptance of these preventive efforts, there is controversy regarding the efficacy of many of these measures. Host optimization, bacteria reduction, and maintaining a proper wound environment are the cornerstones of infection prevention. This chapter provides a concise practice-based review of SSI preventive measures in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods.
