Reduction techniques and the tools needed to achieve them vary based on fracture location, fracture characteristics, and type of planned fixation. This chapter presents an overview of high-yield techniques that the fracture surgeon should have in their toolbox. Pre-operative planning and a well-thought-out approach are critical prior to the reduction stage. Appropriate exposure and identification of individual fragment characteristics are key components of anatomic fracture reduction. Useful techniques are provided for the reduction and fixation of fractures according to their mode of failure and characteristics. Some of the various ways in which implants, such as Kirschner wires and plates, may be used for fracture reduction are described. Finally, a model fracture ‘toolbox’ is suggested, containing instruments that may prove useful in any fracture operation.
