The debate about the resolution of herder–farmer conflicts in Africa has not devoted sufficient attention to its gender dimensions, especially the gendered consequences and responses. The study draws on case study from Darfur of western Sudan to illuminate this concern. The study is predicated upon the gender approach to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, which calls for the participation of women in peacebuilding processes to capture variety of experiences and knowledge. This case study indicates that gender issues are shaping women’s reality and the complexity of their social identity in conflict situation. Women are expected to fulfill extra responsibilities that merely reinforce the idea that they are around to fit a stereotype of gender role even at the battleground. Thus, gender issues can be understood and regarded as continuously produced through and connected to the realities of the multiple and context-specific experiences and the less visible forms of daily peace efforts. On the basis of the study findings, a range of recommendations are made to respond adequately to the problem through programming, activities and policy in a gender-sensitive way.
