Correlational Analysis of Risk-Taking Propensity in Adolescents

An adolescent’s brain is totally different from the brain of a child or an adult. In an adolescent’s brain the Prefrontal cortex, an area in brain that is responsible for executive functioning is being formed while the limbic reward system, an area responsible for pleasure and thrill-seeking gets fully formed. This imbalance in maturation time of these two critical areas in brain leads to a kind of behaviour in adolescents that is characterized by low impulsivity, more inclination towards thrill seeking behaviours and low rationalization and understanding of the consequences of their decisions. Apart from what goes inside the adolescent brain there are external factors that can lead to mental conditions like stress, anxiety, depression, misconduct, suicide, to name a few that pull adolescents towards risk taking behaviours such as substance use, sexual acts, smoking, as ways to cope with these mental stressors. However, not all adolescents get drawn into risky behaviours. There must be some inherent traits that pull adolescents towards risk taking. For the purpose of this study the researchers attempted to identify the factors that increase the propensity of adolescents towards risk taking. This paper attempts to identify the factors that lead to a greater risk-taking propensity in adolescents and also performs a correlational analysis to assess how each of these factors correlates to over-all risk-taking propensity in adolescents. The purpose of the research is to establish the fact that early school level interventions based on addressing these identified factors can help support these adolescents in establishing a sound balance and prevent them from getting into risky behaviours leading to negative consequences.
