This introduction summarizes the collection’s main arguments and insights, as well as contextualizes previous scholarship on hip hop. This critical introduction provides: (1) an overview of the various ways in which hip hop, particularly its aural component, has tragically and dangerously been misappropriated by scholars and (2) some alternative ways for studying hip hop that are accountable to black suffering. Put slightly differently, the introduction briefly explores how the study of hip hop often entrenches antiblackness as well as other social problematics, while also offering some new ways of thinking about hip hop as a whole.
