In this chapter, I discuss the compounds that are borrowed in Kumaonī due to language contact. It also looks into the creation of mixed nominal compounds in Kumaonī. The Kumaon region has remained a place of dynamic contact among Kumaonī and non-Kumaonī speakers. The language in question, Kumaonī, has remained under contact influence of dominant languages due to socioeconomic and sociocultural reasons, and as a result, bilingualism is a characteristic that is common among Kumaonī speakers. Both Kumaonī and Hindi have their own specialized domains of application, but there is significant overlap between the two. The newly attested data consists of Kumaonī-English, Persian-Kumaonī compounds. This chapter has two main goals: description of nominal compound borrowings in Kumaonī from various languages and description of creation of mixed compounds in Kumaonī. The chapter is structured as follows: Section “Introduction” provides a general overview of the chapter. Section “Ethnolinguistic Profile of Kumaonī” gives an ethnolinguistic profile of Kumaonī including an introduction to the language, number of speakers, demography, and linguistic situation of Kumaonī. Section “Brief Survey of Literature on Borrowing and Compounds” looks into the brief literature review of the borrowing as a result of contact and compound formation in Kumaonī. Section “Research Questions, Method, and Material” mentions the data collection methods and the secondary sources used in the present study and Section “Structure of Compounds in Kumaonī” gives a brief introduction to the types of compounds found in Kumaonī. Sectioni “Compound Borrowing in Kumaonī” analyses and classifies compounds borrowed from Sanskrit, Perso-Arabic, Arabic, English, and Hindi. It also discusses the formation of mixed compounds. The study contributes to the studies in contact-induced unidirectional lexical borrowings and compound-internal language mixing in different language pairs.
