Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is a chronic condition resulting from the compression of the celiac artery and ganglia by the median arcuate ligament. With many patients with MALS presenting with commonly seen gastroenterological symptoms. Such as abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, MALS is often a secondary or tertiary diagnosis to other more acute pathologies. MALS has been found to often coincide with other concomitant illnesses that are essential for anesthesiologists to address prior to induction of surgery such as gastroparesis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). By addressing each of the patient’s concomitant disorders and comorbidities preoperatively and monitoring their recovery using the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol is a patient-centered care pathway that aims to help patients recover faster from surgery.
