Sustainability Potential of SFRC in Structural and Non-structural Applications

摘要

Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) has many advantages over conventional Reinforced Concrete (RC) solutions, such as durability, cost-effectiveness, ease of construction and safety are among those benefits. Raft on piles, slabs on ground, small retaining walls are some of the examples of load-bearing structures in the infrastructure, where it could be utilised. The SFRC’s sustainability and cost-saving potential are of interest to clients and contractors, along with current standards and guidelines. This article discusses the design and construction process of load-bearing SFRC structures in Finland, focusing on emission reduction, cost savings, safety and other sustainability aspects. It explains the factors affecting these benefits and provides strategies to achieve them. The paper highlights the use of non-structural SFRC parts in large infrastructure projects, highlighting its sustainability and cost-effectiveness in the construction industry, and serves as a persuasive tool for reluctant clients.
