Life-Cycle Assessment of Chloride Exposed Concrete Structures - A Comparative Study Covering Different Durability Concepts and Repair Measures

To achieve reinforced concrete structures as sustainable as possible, one of the goals is to ensure a long service life with minimized maintenance effort. Components exposed to chlorides, such as those in parking garages, pose a particular challenge. Here, the question arises as to which strategy can be used to achieve the most sustainable construction. Within this context, several technical aspects like quality of concrete, crack width limitation, type of surface protection systems and type of maintenance/repair measures must be considered. To address these aspects, life-cycle assessments for repair measures of a parking garage were carried out. Based on this, the question was answered with which durability and maintenance/repair concept a minimum GWP can be achieved over service life. Based on the results, the paper also presents generally applicable recommendations for the planning and operation of parking garages, which leads to structures with optimized sustainability.
