This article discusses contemporary approaches to discrete production planning. The significance of this subject lies in the necessity to consider the planning process from the perspective of flexibility, as it entails adjustments to the system due to outside influences. It is also essential to analyze systems that can guarantee the proper operation and creation of a successful production plan. The primary objective of this study is to investigate contemporary approaches to adaptive scheduling for discrete manufacturing and propose an alternate methodology for implementing this process. At the outset of the paper, the fundamental characteristics of discrete manufacturing are outlined, followed by a review and comparison with continuous manufacturing. Key areas in which the use of discrete manufacturing with adaptive scheduling at various planning levels could be advantageous are identified. Next, we will discuss supporting systems for planning and controlling discrete manufacturing, such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), as well as possibilities for integrating them. In the final section, a novel multi-agent-based approach to adaptive scheduling for discrete production is presented and analysed, highlighting its key benefits.
