In an age of AI, where computers, algorithms, and digital devices are intrinsic throughout social domains, including education, it is useful, if not critical, to take a glance back at how things were done in the past, so that we do not throw out the baby with the bathwater, as the overused, yet still insightful, proverb, asserts. We live in an environment of rapid change that tends to obliterate any sense of historical flow to human affairs. Perhaps in no other area than math education, which is being flooded by ideas and theories of learning and teaching coming out of AI research, is this type of cliché more significant today than it ever was. The question is whether or not we can connect with history and still learn from the great teachers of mathematics, from Euclid and Alcuin to Lewis Carroll and George Polya.
