Semiotics is interested in signs—how they represent and how we interpret them. Essentially, semiotics uncovers meaning and meaning processes. Recently, the discipline has exploded into subfields and areas of specialization introducing biosemiotics, cognitive semiotics, neurosemiotics, among others. Those interested in the history of semiotics would tell you that these subfields were always built into the study of signs. They did not come about post-facto—they are inherent to the study of meaning. Although all “branches” of semiotics could be useful to a discussion of studying, applying, and learning mathematics as a signifying system, cognitive semiotics seeks to uncover and understand the connection between experience and the mind, with the development of models and representational systems, and the phenomenological implications of such model making.
