Identifying the Value Proposition of Modular Manufacturing Information Systems for Digital Transformation

This study explores the potential value proposition(s) of reconfigurable manufacturing. Within the scope of an EU-funded project, a system is to be developed that enables modularity in production at a product and factory level. Utilising the Value Proposition Canvas as an analytical framework, the research amalgamates insights from a workshop involving key stakeholders. The goal is to identify the different trajectories of value proposition brought forth by such a system in relation to the observed product-market fit. Furthermore, it presents an outlook for introducing the identified value proposition(s) into the shop floor through a process of digital transformation. The findings support that such a system can have several potential value propositions that, in turn, enable process, customer and business model transformation, providing valuable insights to practitioners and researchers. Digital Twins, simulation, optimisation, predictive maintenance and production design, and reconfiguration are vital technologies such a system must have, to alleviate the pains of the end users and provide gains to manufacturers.
