The CE_IPsa (Circular Economy_Industrial Parks and the surrounding area) project aims to outline a development model to foster interconnection between industrial parks (IPs) and their surrounding area, based on circular economy (CE) and industrial symbiosis (IS) principles. CE offers sustainable solutions, fostering economic growth and environmental health. Despite this, CE has received limited attention in the supply chain context. Encompassing CE, IS, and Industry 4.0 (I. 4.0) digital technologies, (such as Blockchain, Internet of Things, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Cloud Computing), this chapter proposes reverse logistics (RL) as a strategic approach for managing product returns, end-of-life treatment, and recovery to eliminate waste. As part of the CE_IPsa project, the study’s purpose is to promote the transition to a net-zero balance, where resource extraction is offset by resource recovery and waste generation is minimized. This chapter shows the preliminary results of the first phase of the CE_IPsa project, building upon a Scooping review, and proposing a framework based on the integration of RL with I. 4.0 technologies as driving force to stimulate the connection between IP and the surrounding context. With a redesigned supply chain that integrates a RL approach empowered by I. 4.0 technologies, businesses within the IPs and the surrounding area can unlock significant potential. This solution optimizes operations and minimizes environmental impact, offering a valuable strategy for policymakers to support the implementation of a circular industrial system. The paper concludes by outlining key challenges, opportunities, and future research directions in harnessing the power of digital transformation for greener businesses.
