The inclusion of AI tools, such as chatbots, in project management is transforming the field. This article investigates how project managers are embracing and customizing these tools, with a specific focus on ChatGPT, to enhance project management practices. Employing Adaptive Structuration Theory, the research examines how project managers are adopting generative AI. It considers factors like Attitude Toward Innovation, Peer Influence, and Alignment of Tasks with Technology, using a survey conducted among project managers in Italy. The methodology used to analyze the data is based on Partial Least Squares—Structural Equation Modeling. The findings validate the importance of the proposed factors in the adoption of AI tools. Attitude Toward Innovation and Peer Influence are found to have a positive impact on the innovative and flexible use of AI in project management. Alignment of Tasks with Technology is crucial for successful integration of AI, influencing both innovative behavior and flexible adoption. The study underscores the significance of a forward-thinking mindset, peer interactions, and task compatibility in the effective utilization of AI tools in project management. It proposes potential avenues for future research, including exploration of cultural and organizational contexts, as well as the rapid advancements in AI technologies.
