This chapter introduces the class of problems studied in this monograph. In Sect. 2.1, convection-diffusion-reaction equations are derived as a result of the modeling process of conservation laws from two applications. The restriction to the stationary equation is performed. For stationary convection-diffusion-reaction problems, maximum principles are well known, which will be reviewed in Sect. 2.2.
