ThermaSiC Coating for Applications in Contact with Molten Aluminum

ThermaSiCThermaSiC is a SiC based coatingCoating where 1 µm particles of SiC are embedded in a matrix of YAG, giving a coatingCoating with high hardness and wear resistance. The coatingCoating is applied to steel substrates using an HVOF thermal SprayThermal spray gun. The coatingCoating has been evaluated and tested for applications facing molten aluminumAluminum. ThermaSiCThermaSiC coatingCoating does not wet molten aluminumAluminum as the contact angle has been measured to be between 140 and 150° depending on coatingCoating conditions. The non-wettingNonwetting and wear-resistant properties have enabled ThermaSiCThermaSiC to work as a novel coatingCoating for the steel rollers submerged in molten aluminumAluminum for extended periods during the aluminizing of steel strips. The use of ThermaSiCThermaSiC on these rollers enabled it to be made of carbonCarbon steel rather than stainless steel at the same time as providing fewer maintenance and quality issues in the final sheet.
