Investigating the Castability of Recycling AZ91 Machining Chips Through Shape Casting

However, the presence of impuritiesImpurities such as oxides on the surfaceSurface of the chips could pose potential issues for their castabilityCastability when used in foundry processes. This study employs stir castingStir casting to pour molten chips and ingots into a complex-shaped steel mould, comparing their castabilityCastability. It also explores castingCasting methods that could enhance the yield of good-quality castingsCasting. The findings indicate that, under appropriate castingCasting conditions, both chips and ingots can produce intact castingsCasting. However, castingsCasting made from chips are more prone to surfaceSurface slump, while those from ingots are more likely to suffer from hot tearingTearing. This could be attributed to the smaller grain size in chip castingsCasting.
