TeqMapping: A Test Developed to Map the Impact of Baking Temperatures on Calcined Petroleum Cokes (CPC)

When the anodeAnode plants start using a wider variety of calcined petroleum cokesCalcined Petroleum Cokes (CPC) in the coke blends there is a need to better understand the impact of different CPCCalcined Petroleum Cokes (CPC)'s post-calcination and thermal desulphurizationThermal Desulphurization (TDS) behaviour during baking. For this, the TeqMappingTeqMapping baking level method (Teq = Equivalent Temperature, ISO 17499) was used. The method gave a reliable baking level scale. A series of cupola furnaceFurnace tests were performed, which showed good repeatability. The baking furnaceFurnace temperature can reach high levels and the TeqMappingTeqMapping results were used to evaluate anodeAnode-grade CPCCalcined Petroleum Cokes (CPC) behaviour in this higher risk situations. Such runs were also performed preparatory to pilot scale anodeAnode tests when the TeqMappingTeqMapping methodology was used to test new CPCCalcined Petroleum Cokes (CPC) qualities. The paper describes how the method was used for CPCCalcined Petroleum Cokes (CPC) characterizationCharacterization including calcination profile, mapping of over 20 elements (e. g. H, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cl, Ba, P, Cu) and especially for post-calcining desulfurization studies.
