Experimental Study of Sodium in Carbon Anodes

The life span of carbon anodesCarbon anode is closely linked to anodeAnode quality. The impurityImpurities content of the anodeAnode affects its properties, especially the anode reactivityAnode reactivity. The anodesAnode come into contact with the electrolyteElectrolyte during the electrolysis. Thus, a certain amount of sodium (Na) coming from the bath, mainly from NaF and Na3AlF6, contaminates the anodeAnode carbonCarbon. Na-containing butts are recycled back to the anodeAnode production cycleCycle as a raw material for the manufacture of the next group of anodesAnode. The objective of the study is to quantify Na, to study its removalRemoval from butts, and to understand its impact on the anode reactivityAnode reactivity. The concentration of Na was measured using Na-ion selective electrode. The separation of Na was carried out successfully by washing the butts with water. The results showed that there is a relation between the anode reactivityAnode reactivity and the Na content of the anodeAnode.
