Solid waste is the degradable (organic) and non-degradable (inorganic) waste materials produced by various sources. The country was estimated to generate 25 million tonnes of solid waste from urban areas every year. The most general practice of clearing these solid wastes from cities, dumping them into open land or sometimes near the wetland. It leads to degradation and pollutes the soil, groundwater, and reduces air quality due to burning those waste materials. This chapter attempted to figure out the various waste management strategies implemented in India and evaluate the impact of solid waste handling on achieving Sustainable Development Goals in India. For this purpose, relevant literature from various published articles has been reviewed and analysed. It has been interpreted to understand the roles and significance of solid waste management and its impact on health and the environment. The lack of proper infrastructure for garbage collection and separation at the source is a major obstacle. This frequently leads to mixed waste streams, which complicates the use of effective recycling or disposal techniques. It is observed that waste handling and management have been affected by various issues such as improper sourcing, separation, and slippage on the road. Because financial restrictions prohibit the adoption of expensive technologies advocated by rich nations, the practice of unregulated mixed trash dumping is common in many places, especially in developing countries.

摘要
