Foreign Deposits and Revenue Dynamics: An Analysis of Selected Indian Public Sector Banks

Indian Public Sector Banks have contributed significantly in the past few years. The 12 PSBs share more than 50% of the revenue generation in the banking sector. Among the PSBs, the State Bank of India has shown a 40% increase from the previous year in terms of its earnings. The Reserve Bank of India has provided several stringent regulations that improved the performance of the banking sectors from both private and public sectors. The current paper examines the contribution of foreign deposits to the 6 selected Public Sector Bank’s revenue generation. The selected PSBs are the State Bank of India, Canara Bank, Indian Bank, Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda. Secondary data on the foreign deposits and revenue generated for 10 years are used to examine the effect of foreign deposits on the revenue generation of the 6 selected banks. The existing body of research is being reviewed extensively and the data collected are analysed using correlation tests and regression analysis. The results of the analysis are in line with the existing literature review. Out of the 6 selected banks, the result of regression showed, that State Bank of India, Canara Bank, and Indian Bank’s foreign deposits significantly impacted the revenue of these banks. Further, the initiatives taken by these banks in balancing the risk and diversifying the funds between domestic and foreign deposits are commendable. The current study provides valuable insights with evidence that the other PSBs to strategize and strengthen their framework and attract more foreign deposits.
