An Overview of the Impact of Drought Stress on Potatoes in the Era of Climate Change
摘要
Abiotic stress has always been a limiting factor for horticulture crops worldwide but now changing climate has made it more difficult. Among all abiotic stresses (cold, heat, drought, flood, salinity, nutrition deficiency, high or low intensity of light including ultraviolet radiation), drought stress has put a huge impact on agricultural crop yield and production. Plants generate tolerance to combat these stresses by adapting different mechanisms. Abiotic stress affects several mechanisms in plants like photosynthesis, biochemical pathways, and stress tolerance. Potato is one of the third most important crops worldwide and it consists of a lot of dietary energy that helps in reducing hunger and enhancing nutrition. Unfortunately, potatoes are also very sensitive to drought stress which effect on quality and production. Climate change and increasing abiotic stress, especially drought stress, that affects potato has been discussed in this chapter. Furthermore, response towards drought stress and phytohormone, and genetic engineering advanced methodology have been elaborated. Genetic editing method as CRISPR/Cas9 and other methods like QTL and GWAS are explained.
