The Impact of Drought Stress on Nutrient and Heavy Metal Uptake by Vegetables

Drought stress poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity, especially in vegetable production. Given the importance of the severity and duration of drought, it is likely that crop losses from drought will be greater than losses from any other stress. It affects the uptake, transportation, and distribution of nutrients, which in turn hampers plant growth and ultimately, production. Moreover, drought also facilitates the absorption of heavy metals, leading to contamination and devastating yield losses. It is widely recognized that the application of additional nutrients will not promote plant growth if the soil already contains sufficient amounts and the drought is severe, although there is inconsistent data on the impact of nutrient addition on plant growth under drought conditions. A better understanding of the role of mineral nutrients in plant tolerance to drought will contribute to improved fertilizer management in arid and semi-arid environments, as well as in regions experiencing short-term droughts. Understanding the impact of water stress on nutrient uptake and assimilation is crucial, particularly in semi-arid regions where vegetable production is prevalent. This chapter provides an overview of the impact of drought on the nutrition of vegetables in drought-vulnerable regions, with a particular focus on how drought affects nutrient availability, the absorption of heavy metals, transportation, and accumulation in vegetables, as well as the interaction between nutrient supply and drought response. Additionally, this chapter discusses various drought management strategies to enhance nutrient availability for vegetables.
