This chapter explores the impact of media coverage on the presumption of innocencePresumption, of innocence in criminal cases, highlighting the ways in which media practices can undermine the rights of suspects and accused individuals and cause an ‘extra punishment’. Through an analysis of case studies from Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, and Spain, the chapter identifies common malpractices such as the use of derogatory language, publication of private information, and prejudiced reporting. Hence, this chapter summarises the media toolbox that jeopardises the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty and crystallises the negative implication of ‘trial by media’ at the individual, familial, and societal level.
