It is a topic of romantic tales; a glacier melts, and human remains return to day-light, uncannily preserved by the slow-moving ice, bringing some of the remote past back with them. Much the same is happening with Kurt Gödel’s thoughts. Many decades ago, he jostled them down in Gabelsberger shorthand, notebook after notebook, strictly for his own use. Preserved in the archives of Princeton, his pencil scribblings slowly faded away, year after year, seemingly lost for posterity, illegible and undecipherable. Today, however, several groups of dedicated scholars bring Gödel’s writing back to life, transcribe it, comment it, translate it. Never has Gödel published more than now.
