Social Engineering in the Era of AI: Unmasking the Changing Face of Cyber Threats
摘要
This paper discusses the evolving challenges that emanate from the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) into the modern world. The increasing rate of development in AI technologies further increased the sophistication of social engineering attacks, and the scale at which susceptibility is leveraged via social engineering methods. The paper discusses some of the impacts of AI on social engineering techniques and their implications for cybersecurity. It examines how using artificial intelligence (AI) tools by cybercriminals manipulates people, extracts data, and compromises systems more effectively and efficiently. More importantly, these tools can be used to manipulate AI-based voice techniques to impersonate a trusted client or modify audio content, furthering the criminal capabilities. Cybersecurity methods must, therefore, be devised on account of this emerging threat landscape. These include establishing programs for promoting awareness among organizations and individuals about the main risks and methodologies involved in AI-based social engineering attacks. The outcome of such cybersecurity practices may lead to developing technological approaches by leveraging AI to detect and prevent these threats. Victims could prepare themselves to respond, detect, and predict such complex cyber threats by improving their understanding of AI technologies and social engineering techniques.
