This introductory chapter provides an overview of the book’s analysis of 628 Hallmark films from January 2015 to December 2023, exploring gender, race, religion, and age representation through both quantitative and qualitative methods. The book contributes to media and cultural studies by examining how Hallmark films reflect, challenge, or uphold societal norms, using an intersectional approach and building on previous research while introducing new methodologies for tracking shifts in representation. The introduction outlines each chapter, starting with an analysis of film posters using Erving Goffman’s framework on gender stereotypes. Chapter 2 focuses on the evolution of gender displays in promotional materials, especially after 2020. Chapter 3 examines behind-the-scenes gender dynamics, assessing the impact of female leadership on film content. Chapter 4 addresses the representation of race, ethnicity, and LGBTQ communities, highlighting progress and ongoing challenges in diversity. Later chapters explore gender dynamics in love stories (Chap. 5 ), portrayals of aging (Chap. 6 ), and the inclusion of marginalized groups (Chap. 7 ). The book also examines Hallmark’s successful formula, including themes of small-town life, seasonal settings, and religious elements (Chaps. 8 and 9 ). Chapter 10 discusses how Hallmark is adapting to social changes, responding to declining viewership and calls for more diversity.
