This chapter and book present the projects that were nominated for the Annual BCI Research Award in 2023. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are devices that convert direct measures of brain activity into messages or commands. Thus, people can convey information without moving. The Annual BCI Research Awards have identified and publicly recognized the top BCI project each year since 2010, which are selected each year by a jury of BCI experts. The people behind these BCI projects are invited to contribute a chapter to our book each year, so most of the chapters in this book describe the best projects from 2023. This introductory chapter describes the annual awards procedure and presents the twelve projects nominated in 2024.
