Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) affects up to 15% of patients with oncological disease, carrying with it a poor prognosis. Treatment of MPE is increasingly focussed on improving quality of life and prioritizing patient preferences. In recent years, MPE treatment has shifted from inpatient-based to outpatient, ambulatory management with a focus on admission avoidance. This chapter reviews the latest evidence in the management of MPE, the current recommended treatment options for different situations faced by pleural clinicians, and the challenges faced when treating MPE.
