Image-Guided Nonablative Treatments and the Abscopal Effect for Lung Cancer Patients
摘要
With 5-year survival rates of early stage lung cancer being quite low, there has been a push to develop new technologies and strategies to precisely target malignant nodules in the lung periphery. Bronchoscopic nonablative modalities, including brachytherapy and direct intratumoral injection of anticancer drugs, are an area of active research. It is thought that these modalities may trigger the immune system to attack metastatic disease, a phenomenon known as the abscopal effect. This chapter reviews the history, current uses, ongoing challenges, and potential future directions of nonablative bronchoscopic therapies and provides an overview of the so-called abscopal effect.
