Robotics were introduced to the surgical field in the 1980s, when Kwoh et al. used a positioning robot to guide stereotaxic neurosurgery. The following years saw an exponential rise in the funding and usage of surgical robotics in other surgical specialties. With assistance from later-developed systems such as the Zeus Robotic Surgical System and its more sophisticated sibling, the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons were able to achieve greater accuracy and better patient outcomes in many commonly performed procedures. This chapter outlines a brief history of robotics in surgery and predicts further growth in the coming years.
