During the COVID-19 pandemic Brazil was seriously impacted, with over 700,000 fatal victims of the virus. Countless personal stories and even entire families were lost. Some of these stories became the inspiration for an ongoing research project. These are the stories of people who migrated, and their lives helped construct the history of twentieth century Brazil. To understand them, we reference the fundamental changes that occurred in Brazil during the nineteenth century. During this time, the idea of Brazil as a nation was built, and migratory policies were formulated. For this reason, the nineteenth century will be widely analyzed in this text. Throughout this work, narratives and stories of the first and also second generation of the so-called historical migrations will be retold. Those are the “Final Memories.” Parallel to that context, the “New Narratives” are those that have been created by the more recent migratory flows to Brazil that have arrived since the 2010s. The record of such stories and subjects brings a diverse approach to the nationalities of immigrants, in order to think about ruptures and continuities of migratory processes throughout the nineteenth century through the beginning of the twenty-first century. Through these narratives, our research will address the complexities and gaps in migration studies focused on Brazil.
