Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) comprise various chemical compounds containing carbon, hydrogen, and chlorine. OCPs have seen wide use in the control of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and in termite control. Lindane is often used as a second-line agent to treat lice and scabies infections. Because of their toxicity, especially to the central nervous system, and persistence in the environment, most have been banned in the United States, but many are still used in underdeveloped countries.
