Environmental change affecting the world is occurring at a much faster rate than previously thought and it is through institutions such as the United Nations (UN) and its United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) that we are made aware that environmental threats are forcing us to make a change in current social and economic models. Critical environmental issues of concern can be summarized as follows: All of the above is increased by global warming and its effects on climate change. Faced with this situation, the university has a social commitment as an agent of change, and it is through its mission functions (teaching, research, extension) that it must carry out the integral and humanistic formation of students so that future professionals are imbued with moral, ethical, social and environmental values. Addressing the issue of the socially responsible university in Latin America means facing the challenges that education must overcome in the twenty-first century, in a society fragmented by economic globalization, dehumanized by scientific and technological development, struck by poverty and social injustice, indifferent to environmental deterioration, with scourges such as corruption, violence, drug trafficking and terrorism, with signs of inequality and social exclusion, all a consequence, in large part, of the persistent economic, educational, social and cultural gap forged between developed and underdeveloped countries. The demand for these changes within education forces universities to rethink their work in society, so that today, in addition to speaking of the professionalizing university, we can speak of the socially responsible university (Vera 2015).
