Post-occupancy evaluations (POE) are employed to examine the well-being of occupants and their reactions to various Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) factors, including thermal conditions, lighting, acoustics, visual comfort, and privacy, among other factors. The Sustainable Post-Occupancy Evaluation Survey (SPOES) developed by an interdisciplinary team at a Midwest University, explores occupants’ satisfaction with several IEQ factors in Building, Benchmark, and Beyond (B3) buildings. It identifies areas that are successful and those that need improvement so as to support occupant health and well-being. The SPOES survey comprises 11 IEQ categories that influence occupant health, well-being, and work performance. It is a self-administered, web-based questionnaire where participants use a Likert-type scale to rate their satisfaction levels from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 7 (very satisfied). This study conducts a comparative analysis of occupants’ perceptions regarding electric lighting and daylighting IEQ in a LEED versus non-LEED certified campus building. Building 1 is a LEED BD+C: New Construction three-story 92,404 square foot educational building used for exhibit, and planetarium spaces; lobbies and support facilities; and office and staff support space. The facility became accessible to the public in June 2018. In May 2019, the SPOES questionnaire was distributed to 138 employees occupying workspaces within the facility. Building 2 is a non-LEED certified seven-story, 198,079 square foot educational building with classrooms, conferences, meeting and support spaces for faculty, staff, and students. The SPOES questionnaire was administered to 160 employees with workspace in the facility during the fall semester of 2018. The U-test results reveal no significant difference in occupants’ perception of “overall privacy conditions (sound and visual privacy)” and “lighting color” between these two buildings (P-value >0.05). However, for all other IEQ factors related to the lighting environment, occupants in these two buildings show significant differences in perception (P-value <0.05). A comparative analysis of survey questionnaires from the two buildings indicates that occupants at Building 1 (LEED) are more satisfied with overall lighting aspects compared to those in Building 2 (Non-LEED). Regarding electric lighting conditions such as “the amount of noise produced by electric lighting fixtures”, “ease of turning electric lights on and off”, “effectiveness of automatic lighting sensors”, “quality of task lighting”, and “visual comfort of electric light”, occupants at the Building 1 express higher satisfaction levels than those in the Building 2. Concerning the impact of lighting on work performance and health, occupants at Building 1 believe that both daylighting and electric lighting can enhance their work performance and health. In contrast, occupants at Building 2 tend to hold a neutral stance, neither hindering nor enhancing. However, Building 2 occupants believe that daylighting has a more significant impact on their work performance and health compared to electric lighting in their workspaces. For lighting color, occupants from both buildings perceive no significant differences, categorizing the lighting color as “neutral.” However, except for those occupants who choose “neutral” (around 50%), more at Building 1 tend to consider the lighting color as “somewhat warm”, while more at Building 2 lean towards “somewhat cool”. Future research plans involve collecting more occupant samples and exploring additional LEED and non-LEED campus buildings to further validate the study’s results and offer deeper insights into residents’ perceptions of the lighting environment on campus.
