Humanity is facing political and economic instability, growing economic precarity and ecological devastation all resulting from the same extractive and exploitative social and economic systems that are causing more frequent and intense climate disruptions. During this time of increased suffering and climate instability, higher education institutions are grappling with their role in perpetuating—or resisting—the systems, practices and priorities that are causing the polycrises that humanity is facing. The higher education sector has been under-analyzed in terms of its power and influence in reinforcing the unjust systems and the exploitative structures that are preventing systemic change that would lead to a better future for all. This chapter embraces a transformative lens to review the power and influence of higher education institutions and then reimagine universities as change agents for climate justice, economic justice and ecological health. The research question addressed in this chapter is how can higher education be reconceptualized as a change agent, a facilitator of transformation, to advance climate and economic justice and ecological health? Drawing from interdisciplinary perspectives and diverse experiences, a case is made for reimagining universities as critical infrastructure for societal transformation.
