In addition to mitigating and adapting to climate change, higher education institutions (HEIs) need to address climate injustices on their campuses and beyond. Indeed, no response to the climate crisis would be complete without full consideration of the systemic injustices that foster climate change, the specific impacts of climate change on underprivileged populations, and social movements and communities fighting for climate justice all over the world. This chapter asks what could be done to support climate justice planning as the next frontier in campus sustainability. This work argues that the limited number of HEIs clearly committed towards climate justice can be explained by the nature of climate justice planning and the inadequacy of tools and practices used in the past to diffuse campus sustainability. As a result, this chapter develops a framework for climate justice planning to guide HEIs towards a place-based, participatory, and transformative planning process. By using this framework to guide and benchmark their efforts to implement climate justice on campus, a data base on climate justice initiatives could progressively be built to inspire HEIs to deepen their efforts.
