This article explores the evolution of memory storage and knowledge management from antiquity to the digital age, focusing on the impact of generative AI. It begins with the efforts of historical figures such as Aristotle and Pliny the Elder, then examines the transition from linear and hierarchical knowledge structures to modern decentralized and interactive networks facilitated by the Internet. Special focus is placed on the pedagogical model of UNINETTUNO International Telematic University, which uses advanced technologies to overcome barriers of traditional learning. Developed through years of research, this model combines technical, cognitive, and pedagogical components to promote active and collaborative learning, providing access to video lectures, virtual labs and interactive classes in a multilingual and hypermedia environment. Ethical and practical challenges related to AI are discussed, including the spread of misinformation and the need for transparency in algorithmic decision-making. An approach is proposed that values critical thinking and the strategic integration of AI as a supporting tool rather than a substitute for human capabilities. The article also explores the potential of generative AI in creating personalized content, improving access and quality of education. Finally, a concrete example of AI in education is presented: a conversational assistant that interacts with students and teachers, facilitating access to educational resources and enhancing the learning experience.
