Modelling Attitudes Toward Application of Statistics Among Students
摘要
Statistics is a structural approach to problem solving that is widely used in a variety of sectors. Statistics has secured a major role in academic field, scientific area and everyday life. It has become one of the subjects in most curriculum due to the importance of the subject. This paper presents an approach for analysing students’ point of view on Statistics using logistic regression to predict the probability of applying Statistics based on their attitudes. A survey utilising Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics (SATS) was conducted to modelling the student’s attitudes toward Statistics subject. Affective, cognitive competence, value, difficulty, interest and effort are the six domains that contribute to point of view. From the results, the students demonstrated positive point of view in the domain of effort, followed by affective domain and value domain. This study also looked into the relationship between the six domains. There is positive relationship between the domains except for the relationship between difficulty and effort which displayed a negative relationship. This model indicates that when student put in effort in learning the Statistics subject, the difficulty towards the subject will be decreased and vice versa. Meanwhile, male and female difficulty and effort levels differ significantly. The results from this study can serve as points of reflection and recommendations to improve the student’s attitude towards Statistics.
