Despite the overwhelming popularity of Linnaeus’s sexual system, many botanists realized that a better system awaited development. Even Linnaeus, himself, attempted a natural system of classification, which would be based on a constellation of characters that would join in circumscribing units, and hence imparting the system with a much higher predictive value. The French botanists never embraced the artificial sexual system, and it is no surprise that two important contributors to the development of natural systems lived in Paris. The Jussieu family consisted of several botanists, with Bernard de Jussieu first providing a sketch of a natural system. This was much elaborated by his nephew, Antoine de Jussieu, with his landmark Genera plantarum of 1789. In the meantime, Michel Adanson also produced a novel approach in his Familles des plantes of 1763, made especially interesting by his detailed character analyses. These early natural systems were followed by massive projects, particularly from the de Candolle family in Geneva, Switzerland. In England, another Genera plantarum project was completed by Bentham and Hooker, published after Darwin’s Origin of Species (1859) but not at all evolutionary in concept.
