Phenetics attempted to put biological classification on a quantitative, objective, and repeatable basis. To do this required a cost: the ignoring of phylogeny, which was regarded as too speculative. This rejection was never fully accepted by the community, and it eventually led to the development of cladistics. Furthermore, because of numerous parallelisms among angiosperms, phenetics never resulted in a new, accepted, comprehensive classification of flowering plants.
