The Population Revolution: Evolutionary Processes and Classification

In the 1920s and 1930s, an interest developed to unite genetics with populations to better understand processes of evolution. Much of the earlier work began from zoologists, working with Drosophila, but a strong botanical research group developed at the Carnegie Institute of Washington, Stanford, California. Based on earlier work by H. M. Hall, the team of Clausen, Keck, and Hiesey collaborated on experimental transplant studies and crossing programs between and among populations to reveal the nature of plant species. These studies eventually resulted in what was called biosystematics, designed to find the natural plant units. The focus of these investigations was entirely on the level of species and below, and much was learned about the genetic and environmental bases of plant taxa. Important was that these studies were more precise and heavily statistical, which set the stage for development of more quantitative approaches to classification.
